Frequently asked questions

A street I walked did not color in. Why?

WalkMap matches your walk to the street grid after you finish, and it is deliberately conservative: when the GPS signal is too noisy to be sure, it skips the block rather than guessing. Walking the block again almost always credits it. Streets also only count inside a supported city.

Does WalkMap upload my location?

No. Your raw GPS trace never leaves your phone. Matching happens on the device, and only abstract street segment IDs and totals sync to our servers. Details in the privacy policy.

Which cities are supported?

Dozens of cities across the US, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris. Open the app in a supported city and it switches automatically. Want your city added? Email us.

How do weekly races work?

Create a group and share the invite link. Everyone races on new streets walked this week, and the board resets every Monday so latecomers can win.

Will WalkMap drain my battery?

Tracking is motion gated: GPS runs only while you are actually moving on foot. Typical daily use costs a few percent of battery.

How do I delete my data?

In the app: Settings → Privacy → Delete my data. It erases your account and everything tied to it, permanently. You can also email us to request deletion.
